Description

CalAmp VPOD2 134615 — OBD-II Vehicle ECU Interface & Diagnostic Data Adapter

The CalAmp VPOD2 134615-VPOD2 is a compact OBD-II vehicle ECU interface designed to expand the vehicle-data capabilities of compatible CalAmp LMU telematics devices. Installed directly into a vehicle's SAE J1962 16-pin OBD-II diagnostic connector, the VPOD2 communicates with the vehicle's electronic control systems and makes supported diagnostic and operating parameters available to the connected CalAmp telematics device.

Rather than functioning as a standalone GPS tracker, the VPOD2 acts as a vehicle-data bridge between the OBD-II network and a compatible CalAmp LMU. It combines OBD-II protocol support, vehicle power, ignition-state detection and serial communications in a compact plug-in form factor. This allows fleet-management systems to combine GPS and cellular telematics information from the LMU with operating information obtained directly from the vehicle.

Direct OBD-II Vehicle Connection

The VPOD2 connects directly to the vehicle through a J1962-compatible 16-pin OBD-II connector

The compact OBD-II plug design simplifies installation by allowing the interface to obtain both its vehicle communications and electrical connection through the diagnostic port.

CalAmp's specification lists:

  • J1962-compatible 16-pin OBD-II connector

  • Direct vehicle power through the diagnostic connector

  • Filtered 12 V automotive power supply

  • Input-voltage monitoring

  • Low-current operation

This makes the VPOD2 particularly useful for fleet installations where access to vehicle ECU information is required without constructing a custom vehicle-bus interface.

Multi-Protocol OBD-II Support

The VPOD2 supports multiple vehicle diagnostic standards used across different makes, models and generations of OBD-II vehicles.

CalAmp specifies support for:

  • ISO 15765 CAN

  • ISO 9141-2 K-Line

  • J1850 PWM

  • J1850 VPW

  • J2411 Single-Wire CAN

  • Various OEM interfaces and protocols

This multi-protocol architecture allows the VPOD2 to communicate with a broad range of compatible OBD-II vehicles rather than being restricted exclusively to newer CAN-bus vehicles.

Vehicle Identification Number — VIN

The VPOD2 can retrieve the vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) when that parameter is available through the vehicle's OBD-II interface.

VIN acquisition can be particularly valuable in fleet deployments because it provides a vehicle-derived identifier that can be associated with the telematics device.

This can help fleet-management systems validate device-to-vehicle assignments and reduce errors associated with manually entered vehicle information.

Vehicle Speed

Supported vehicles can provide vehicle speed through the VPOD2.

Vehicle-derived speed can supplement GNSS-based speed information and provide telematics applications with an additional operating parameter obtained directly from the vehicle ECU.

Engine Speed — RPM

The VPOD2 supports reporting of engine speed when available from the connected vehicle.

Engine RPM is useful for understanding vehicle operating state and can contribute to applications involving utilization, engine operation and fleet analytics.

Throttle Position

CalAmp lists throttle position among the parameters that the VPOD2 can retrieve from compatible vehicles.

Throttle information can provide additional context about engine demand and vehicle operation when incorporated into fleet telematics reporting.

Vehicle Odometer

The VPOD2 supports odometer information where that information is available through the vehicle's OBD-II data port.

Vehicle-derived odometer information can be particularly useful for:

  • Preventive-maintenance scheduling

  • Mileage reporting

  • Vehicle utilization

  • Service intervals

  • Fleet lifecycle management

Availability remains vehicle-dependent.

Fuel Level

The VPOD2 can retrieve fuel-level information from compatible vehicles.

When exposed through the vehicle's diagnostic interface, this information can be incorporated into telematics applications for fuel monitoring and operational reporting.

Fuel Rate

CalAmp separately lists fuel rate as a supported reporting parameter. on can provide additional insight into vehicle operation and consumption, particularly when combined with location, speed, engine RPM and trip information from the telematics platform.

Trip Fuel Consumption

The VPOD2 also supports trip fuel consumption where available from the vehicle.

This parameter can be valuable for fleet applications focused on trip-level fuel analysis and operating-cost reporting.

Engine Coolant Temperature

The VPOD2 can report engine coolant temperature from supported vehicles.

Coolant-temperature data can provide useful operational context and can potentially contribute to maintenance-oriented fleet reporting when the vehicle makes the parameter available through OBD-II.

Ignition Status

The VPOD2 provides ignition-status information and includes an ignition-status output on its LMU interface.

Ignition state is a fundamental telematics parameter because it allows the connected system to distinguish between operating and non-operating vehicle states.

This can be incorporated into trip detection, reporting schedules, idle calculations and other fleet-management logic.

MIL — Malfunction Indicator Lamp Status

The VPOD2 supports reporting of MIL status, commonly associated with the vehicle's Check Engine indicator.

This allows a compatible telematics application to identify when the vehicle ECU is reporting a condition that has activated the malfunction indicator.

Combined with diagnostic trouble-code reporting, MIL status can support remote vehicle-health monitoring.

Airbag Dash Indicator

CalAmp also lists the airbag dashboard indicator among the VPOD2's supported reporting capabilities.

As with other vehicle parameters, availability depends on whether the specific vehicle exposes the information through an interface and protocol supported by the VPOD2.

Battery Voltage

The VPOD2 can provide vehicle battery-voltage information

The hardware itself also incorporates an input-voltage monitor ADC, allowing vehicle electrical supply information to become part of the telematics solution.

Battery-voltage monitoring can help provide visibility into vehicle electrical conditions and power-related events.

Trip Odometer

In addition to overall odometer information, CalAmp lists trip odometer among the available VPOD2 reporting parameters.

This provides another vehicle-derived metric that can be incorporated into trip and utilization reporting.

Service Interval Information

The VPOD2 supports service interval information where exposed by the vehicle.

This can help telematics applications support preventive-maintenance workflows based on vehicle-provided service information rather than relying solely on GPS-derived mileage or elapsed time.

Oil Life Monitoring

CalAmp also lists oil life as a supported vehicle parameter.

Where supported by the vehicle, oil-life information can provide an additional maintenance indicator for fleet-management applications.

Diagnostic Trouble Code — DTC Reporting

A major capability of the VPOD2 is its support for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

According to the VPOD2 data sheet, the device provides the option to deliver:

  • Pending DTCs

  • Stored DTCs

  • Permanent DTCs

where those codes are available under SAE J1979.

This allows vehicle diagnostic information to be incorporated into remote fleet-management and maintenance workflows.

Instead of requiring every vehicle fault to first be discovered during a physical service inspection, compatible diagnostic information can be captured through the vehicle's OBD-II system and made available through the telematics architecture.

Generic & OEM Diagnostic Trouble Codes

CalAmp specifies support for:

  • Generic DTCs

  • OEM DTCs available under J1979

  • Internal DTC filtering capability

Internal filtering can help the telematics solution control which diagnostic information is forwarded for processing or reporting.

The exact codes available remain dependent on the vehicle ECU and what it exposes through its diagnostic interface.

Additional Custom Codes

The VPOD2 specification also lists support for additional custom codes

This capability helps accommodate vehicle-specific implementations beyond the standard parameters available across the broader OBD-II vehicle population.

Vehicle Parameter Availability

There is an important qualification from CalAmp that I recommend retaining in your DCS Shopify description:

Not every parameter is available on every vehicle.

The VPOD2 firmware supports delivery of the parameters identified by CalAmp when those parameters are available from the vehicle's OBD-II data port

This is important because the VPOD2 cannot create information that a particular vehicle ECU does not expose. Available data varies according to vehicle manufacturer, model, model year, ECU implementation and diagnostic protocol.

5-Pin LMU Serial & Power Interface

On the telematics-device side, the VPOD2 uses a 5-pin serial/power cable with a 3 mm connector

The interface provides:

  • Power

  • Ground

  • Serial data

  • Ignition-status output

  • Optional RS-232 serial data

This interface allows the VPOD2 to pass vehicle information to a compatible CalAmp LMU while also providing the electrical connections required by the integration.

Optional RS-232 Serial Data

CalAmp specifically identifies optional RS-232 serial data as an LMU-side interface capability.

This provides additional flexibility for compatible CalAmp configurations where conventional RS-232 communication is required.

Filtered 12-Volt Automotive Power

The VPOD2 receives vehicle power directly through the diagnostic connector and provides a filtered 12 V automotive power supply.

This is an important part of the accessory's design because the VPOD2 is not simply a passive OBD cable. It provides both vehicle-bus interfacing and power-related functionality for the connected telematics architecture.

Input Voltage Monitoring

An integrated input-voltage monitor ADC provides voltage-monitoring capability.

CalAmp also lists battery voltage among the VPOD2's reportable vehicle parameters.

Together, these capabilities allow vehicle electrical information to become part of the overall telematics data set.

Low-Current Operation

CalAmp specifies low current consumption as an electrical feature of the VPOD2.

This is particularly important for permanently installed fleet telematics systems where the accessory may remain connected to the vehicle's diagnostic connector continuously.

Compact OBD-II Plug Form Factor

The VPOD2 is designed around a compact OBD-II plug form factor.

CalAmp specifies physical dimensions of approximately:

47 × 43 × 25 mm
1.85 × 1.69 × 0.98 inches

The standard attached cable is approximately:

1 meter / 3.28 feet.

The compact design allows the vehicle interface electronics to be incorporated directly into the OBD-II-side assembly rather than requiring a separate large diagnostic module.

Designed for Compatible CalAmp LMU Telematics Devices

The VPOD2 is designed as an accessory for compatible CalAmp LMU vehicle-tracking and telematics platforms.

CalAmp currently identifies the VPOD2 Vehicle ECU Interface as an accessory for the LMU-5541, for example. (CalAmp)

Historical distributor listings specifically identify 134615-VPOD2 as the external OBD-II dongle for CalAmp 26xx, 27xx and 42xx device families.

Compatibility should therefore be confirmed against the specific LMU model, firmware, harness and intended vehicle rather than assuming that the 134615-VPOD2 can be connected to every CalAmp tracker.
