Description
CalAmp LMU-3040MB — LTE Cat-M1 OBD-II Vehicle Telematics Tracker
The CalAmp LMU-3040MB is a compact, next-generation OBD-II telematics device designed for connected vehicle, commercial fleet, vehicle diagnostics, driver monitoring, and enterprise telematics applications. Combining LTE Cat-M1 cellular connectivity, multi-constellation GNSS, comprehensive OBD-II vehicle data extraction, Bluetooth Low Energy, motion sensing, onboard intelligence, and an internal backup battery, the LMU-3040MB provides a powerful plug-in platform for monitoring vehicles without the complexity of a traditional hardwired installation. (CalAmp)
Designed for straightforward deployment, the LMU-3040MB connects to a vehicle's OBD-II interface and supports a broad range of vehicle communication protocols, including J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO-9141-2, ISO-14230 KWP2000, ISO-15765 CAN, and SW-CAN. The embedded OBD firmware stack automatically detects vehicle interface services and can transmit standard OBD-II diagnostic codes as well as supported manufacturer-specific codes. Vehicle-specific diagnostic scripts can also be downloaded based on the applicable vehicle model and variant. (CalAmp)
Advanced GNSS Vehicle Location
The LMU-3040MB incorporates a 55-channel hybrid GPS/GLONASS/SBAS GNSS engine with support for WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS augmentation. CalAmp specifies approximately 2.5-meter CEP open-sky location accuracy, tracking sensitivity down to -167 dBm, acquisition sensitivity of -157 dBm for hot starts and -148 dBm for cold starts, and location updates at rates of up to 5 Hz. Assisted GPS location assistance is also supported. (CalAmp)
This positioning capability makes the LMU-3040MB suitable for applications requiring accurate vehicle location, trip history, fleet visibility, geofencing and vehicle-event reporting.
LTE Cat-M1 Cellular Connectivity
The global LMU-3040MB variant supports LTE Cat-M1 across numerous frequency bands and also includes GSM/GPRS support. Data communications include SMS, UDP packet data, TCP and TLS, along with integration with the CalAmp Telematics Cloud API. (CalAmp)
All primary wireless antennas—including cellular, GNSS and Bluetooth Low Energy—are internal, helping maintain the device's compact installation footprint without requiring external antenna placement. (CalAmp)
OBD-II Vehicle Diagnostics
One of the key advantages of the LMU-3040MB is its ability to combine GPS tracking with vehicle diagnostic information. The unit can automatically identify supported vehicle interface services and extract standard OBD-II data along with supported manufacturer-specific information through its embedded diagnostic firmware. (CalAmp)
This allows a properly configured telematics solution to combine vehicle position with operating and diagnostic information for fleet-management applications.
Driver Behavior and Motion Detection
The LMU-3040MB incorporates both a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope. The accelerometer provides impact and motion sensing, while the combined sensor platform supports telematics applications involving vehicle movement and driver-event detection. CalAmp highlights applications including speeding, accident detection, extreme braking and cornering. (CalAmp)
These capabilities can help fleet-management platforms identify driving events and provide additional context beyond basic GPS location reporting.
Bluetooth Low Energy
Integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) provides an additional short-range wireless interface. CalAmp positions the LMU-3040MB as part of a gateway and tag ecosystem capable of integrating with purpose-built tags and sensors, including applications for monitoring cargo location while in transit. (CalAmp)
Edge Intelligence and Data Storage
CalAmp's PEG™ edge intelligence architecture allows device functionality to be updated and supports development of applications that operate at the edge. The LMU-3040MB provides 32 built-in geofences and buffering capacity for as many as 20,000 messages. (CalAmp)
Message buffering is particularly valuable in mobile applications where cellular coverage may temporarily become unavailable, allowing information to be retained by the device for subsequent transmission.
Internal Backup Battery
An integrated 180 mAh lithium-ion backup battery provides power-loss protection and enables the device to continue operating under supported conditions when primary vehicle power is interrupted. CalAmp positions this capability as battery assurance against interference or loss of primary power. (CalAmp)
The battery carries certifications including IEEE 1625/1725, U.S. DOT 38.3, IEC 62133-2 and UL 2054. (CalAmp)
Compact OBD-II Design
At only 1.88 × 2.50 × 1.14 inches (48 × 63.25 × 29 mm) and approximately 2.54 oz (72 g), the LMU-3040MB packages its cellular, GNSS, BLE, OBD-II and sensor capabilities into a compact enclosure. (CalAmp)
The device operates with 12–24 VDC vehicle systems, with CalAmp specifying 9–30 VDC for startup and normal operation and momentary operation from 7–32 VDC. Typical power consumption is approximately 675 µA at 12 V in deep sleep, 2 mA during sleep on an active network and 60 mA during active tracking with GNSS and cellular communications enabled. (CalAmp)
Environmental and Fleet-Grade Design
The LMU-3040MB is specified for operation from -30°C to +60°C while connected to primary power and -10°C to +60°C while operating from its internal battery. It is designed to meet shock and vibration requirements associated with U.S. Military Standards 202G, 810F and SAE J1455, with ESD testing to IEC 61000-4-2. (CalAmp)
